New York Times article reports that vigilante groups are growing increasingly violent, as we have predicted

It is a very long article, so I won't report it in full here. The full article can be accessed at:

Online ‘Pedophile Hunters’ Are Growing More Violent — and Going Viral

With the rise of loosely moderated social media platforms, a fringe vigilante movement is experiencing a dangerous evolution.

A vigilante phenomenon has been playing out on the open web for almost a decade: Content creators in the U.S. pose as minors on dating apps and websites, then target the people who message them. Many of these vigilantes, commonly known as pedophile hunters, were inspired by “To Catch a Predator,” a popular television series that ran until 2007. The “hunters” have copied the show’s format, exposing their targets on social media.

But in the past two years, a growing number have gone a step further and violently attacked the targets in their videos, a New York Times analysis has found.

In one of the most brutal cases, a masked man who referred to himself online as “realjuujika” (real name:Ahmad Al-Azzam)allegedly broke into the home of a 73-year-old man in Pennsylvania last year, then tied him up and beat him with a hammer.

In a video, realjuujika stands over the bloodied man and claims he caught him trying to solicit sex from a 15-year-old boy. He robs the man and films his credit cards, sharing the information with his thousands of followers.

Realjuujika, at one point, turns to the man and says, “You will probably die tonight.” When the footage was streamed online weeks later, viewers cheered the violence.

The man was hospitalized, according to police reports, and needed surgery to stop the bleeding in his brain. The attack was part of a small, but disturbing trend that has spread on social media and attracted millions of viewers.

There have been more than 170 violent vigilante attacks by pedophile hunters since 2023, according to a Times analysis of hundreds of videos and social media posts. The footage shows hunters chasing their targets through retail stores, beating people bloody on public streets and shaving the heads of their targets. In the most extreme cases, people have been hospitalized with serious injuries.

The Times analysis found that at least 22 individuals and groups have inflicted violence in the name of pedophile hunting in the last two years, compared with roughly 40 others who made similar videos without violence. Most of the violent activity started in the past year.

“There has been a notable increase in overt physical violence within these groups,” said Emma Hussey, an Australian criminologist who studied U.S. pedophile hunters at Queensland University of Technology...

Some longtime groups have built larger audiences after turning to violence. Dads Against Predators, the most prolific group analyzed by The Times, was not violent in the majority of its videos when it started in 2020. But after it began posting on Locals three years later, videos showed the group routinely brutalizing its targets, attacking at least 100 people, The Times found.

The group now claims to have hundreds of paying subscribers, and clips from their videos frequently go viral.

“To see early videos, unedited videos, fights, and stuff that will get me banned on social media head to locals!” wrote Joshua Mundy, one of the group's founders, in a Facebook post...

Child predators are some of the most universally reviled people in the country. That has helped pedophile hunters shield themselves from public scrutiny of their actions. Often, the hunters post chat logs that they allege show their targets soliciting sex from people posing as minors, and in some cases law enforcement has worked with them to arrest and prosecute their targets.

But the violent groups are often less interested in working with the criminal justice system. “We don’t count arrests and catches,” Mr. Mundy said in an Instagram post claiming that Dads Against Predators had caused more suicides among its targets than any other group. “We count bodies.”

Law enforcement experts said those groups put bystanders in danger by attacking people in public places and jeopardize criminal cases.

“Attacking someone so you can make money on social media is a crime,” said District Attorney Christopher L. de Barrena-Sarobe of Chester County, Pa., where the realjuujika attack took place...

In October, students at Assumption University in Massachusetts allegedly lured a 22-year-old man to campus, called him a predator and chased and attacked him when he tried to escape, according to a police report. After reviewing the man’s Tinder messages, officers said the man had thought he was meeting an 18-year-old student, not a 17-year-old, as the students had alleged.

Two weeks later, fraternity members and pledges at Salisbury University in Maryland allegedly posed as a 16-year-old on Grindr, a dating app used primarily by gay men. They invited a man to an off-campus apartment, where they restrained him, called him slurs and broke one of his ribs. The age of consent in Maryland is 16...

In one of the final realjuujika videos, Mr. Al-Azzam, holding a hammer and wearing the same disguise he used during his attacks, recited a list of his motivations that echoed conspiracy theories popular in right-wing circles. He said the government was protecting “sick-minded people” and that presidents had sexually assaulted children. He asked for support from Mr. Ross and Andrew Tate, an online influencer known for his misogynistic views, who is facing criminal charges for sexual misconduct.

To his viewers, he called for action: “You guys need to stand up and get shit done.”...

These platforms gained prominence in recent years, after sustained right-wing outrage over claims of online censorship. Locals was founded after a right-wing personality was banned by its mainstream competitor Patreon for using a racial slur. Rumble, which acquired Locals in 2021, has been backed by prominent conservative figures. Before Vice President JD Vance became a senator in 2023, his venture capital fund was a major investor in the company. His office did not respond when asked if he still had an investment in Rumble...

In some cases, local officials did not charge them because the people who were attacked declined to press charges or never alerted law enforcement. In others, authorities themselves chose not to pursue charges.

Of the 22 violent groups and individuals identified by The Times, only seven appear to have been criminally charged for their actions, according to a review of police and court records.

Students who allegedly helped orchestrate the pedophile hunting at Assumption University are facing felony kidnapping and conspiracy charges. One of those students was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Students at Salisbury University were originally arrested on felony assault and hate crime charges, but most had their charges dropped or reduced to misdemeanor assault and false imprisonment.

Mr. Al-Azzam is facing more than 20 charges across multiple states and is being held on $1 million bail in Pennsylvania. His trial is pending.

But the criminal justice system has not deterred some of the largest groups.

Mr. Carnicom of Dads Against Predators and four other men were charged with a felony offense in Texas for chasing a man in a parking lot and beating him while he was on the ground in September. The attack was livestreamed on Kick. Mr. Carnicom left Texas before charges were filed and has continued to post videos on Locals...

Arrest warrants issued against vigilante group "Dads Against Predators"

My only question is, why did it take so long to issue warrants against DAP? Lock those bastards up and throw away the key!

Dads Against Predators ‘lured’ man to store before gunfire, NC cops say. Warrants issued

Three members of the group Dads Against Predators “lured” a man to a store before gunfire erupted — and now warrants have been issued in the North Carolina case, officials said.

The group members are accused of using the Meetup app to get the man to come to a Target store in Winston-Salem. When the man arrived on June 28, all three members started to beat him on the head repeatedly, according to the city’s police department.

The 25-year-old man reportedly pulled out a gun and fired a shot to try to stop the attack. The gunfire injured one of the accused attackers, but the assault continued until the group took his gun and ran off, officials said.

Now, months later, arrest warrants have been issued for all three men identified as suspects in the case. The man who had previously been identified as the “victim” by officials also is facing warrants.

In response to McClatchy News’ requests for comment about the warrants tied to the shooting at its Hanes Mall Boulevard store, Target shared an emailed statement.

“I can confirm we’re aware and will continue to provide law enforcement with any information needed for their investigation,” a spokesperson wrote.

The day after the shooting, a man went to an Ohio medical center with a gunshot wound to his leg, officials said.

Then less than a week later, officials said that man and two other people were responsible for the Target store attack. The three men — from North Carolina and Ohio — were part of a social media group called Dads Against Predators, McClatchy News reported.

Officials said each of the men was issued a “warrant for arrest for simple affray” last month. One of the men reportedly turned himself in on Jan. 3 and is scheduled to be back in court later this month.

After he was beaten at the Target store, the 25-year-old man went to a hospital with minor injuries, police said. He now faces warrants for simple affray and carrying a concealed handgun, according to an updated news release.

On Jan. 10, the Winston-Salem Police Department didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information about why the man is being charged.

An investigation continues, and officers ask those with information to call them at 336-773-7700, Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800 or the Spanish language line at 336-728-3904. People also can text 336-276-1717 or share tips online.

Founding member of Dads Against Predators member, Terrance Hill, busted on camera beating his girlfriend

This is Terrance Hill, one of the fouding members of Fremont Ohio's worst, "Dads Against Predators." It makes me wonder if the other DAP dipshits do the same thing. And to think, this is the type of person people find "heroic."

Dads Against Predators, huh? But domestic abuse is apparently okay.

Dads Against Predators member gets shot during entrapment bust. Too bad he did not get killed

They were warned, even threatened with prosecution, to step down. Sooner or later this was going to happen. One of these vigilante groups confronted a guy they set up and were shot for their troubles. They are fortunate their target was a lousy shot. They should be charged with assault, harassment, and disturbing the peace, to say the least. They created a scene that could have gotten people killed. Quitr frankly, I hope next time, they fuck with someone who lights them up with an AR-15 and does the world a favor.

Dads Against Predators group 'lured' man to Winston-Salem Target, police say

Police said the man who was "lured" to the Target on Hanes Mall Boulevard fired his gun inside the store, hitting one of the D.A.P. members in the leg.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police said an incident involving a group called Dads Against Predators - or D.A.P. - forced an evacuation at the Target on Hanes Mall Boulevard last Tuesday.

Detectives said three men with D.A.P., as they're known on social media, "lured" a 25-year-old man to Target through the social media app Meet Up.

Once the man was in the store, police said the dad group confronted him, wanting to know why he was there.

Police said one of the D.A.P. members was recording the interaction on his cell phone. Police said a fight broke out and the man who was "lured" there took out a handgun and fired a round which struck a D.A.P. member in the leg.

Investigators said the dad group took the man's gun from him and left the Target in a car with Ohio tags.

The man who'd been beaten by the group went to a Forsyth County hospital for his injuries.

Police didn't find the gun until the next morning. It was three miles from the Target store, on Sunderland Road.

Winston-Salem police were later alerted by Ohio law enforcement that one of the D.A.P. men showed up at a hospital in Ohio for injuries. Police said he was treated and released for minor injuries that same day.

Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson discussed the dangers of these "vigilante groups" and how they can hurt an investigation more than help.

"Not only do they not have the training and experience of a law enforcement officer, typically their methods of investigation and evidence do not meet the requirement for successful prosecution of these cases. In fact, sometimes their actions in initial investigations may harm a case more than it helps it," Chief Thompson said in a briefing last week - a day after the Target incident.

Thompson said citizens who try to take the law into their own hands aren't just putting themselves in danger, but the public as well.

"We are also extremely concerned for the safety of the members of the citizens' groups and the community in general because the tendency of these groups is to lure a potential suspect to a public place to confront them. These confrontations are likely to create disturbances and certainly have the potential for violence," she said.

Chief Thompson also explained how vigilante groups like D.A.P. operate.

"The groups create posts on various social media apps impersonating a juvenile and engages potential suspects in conversation. If the conversation becomes sexually explicit, the members then arrange to meet the suspect," she said.

Winston-Salem police said they are not actively looking for the three D.A.P. men involved in the incident. Police said their Gun Crime Reduction Unit is currently investigating what happened.

Last week, WFMY News 2's Jenna Kurzyna spoke with the man who'd been beaten inside the store. He did not want to go on camera, but his injuries were visible. The man had cuts on his face, swelling, and a black eye. He said he did not know the suspects.

Target released the following statement last week:

"On Tuesday evening, there was an altercation between three people inside our Hanes Mall store, during which a weapon was fired, though no one was struck. Our team immediately evacuated the store and the Winston-Salem Police Department quickly responded. The store has since reopened and we're assisting law enforcement with their investigation. At this time, we'll refer additional questions to police."

Investigators learn more about ‘Dads Against Predators’ members accused in incident at North Carolina Target

by: Madison Forsey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — More details have emerged about a group that Winston-Salem police say is responsible for chaos last week at the Target store on Hanes Mall Boulevard.

Police said two men from Fremont, Ohio, and one man from Marion, North Carolina — all connected to an Ohio-based group known as “Dads Against Predators” — were at the center of the incident.

According to Winston-Salem police, Jay Carnicom, 28, Joshua Mundy, 29, and Jason Chipps went inside the store to confront a 25-year-old man they had lured there by making him think he was meeting someone underage.

The group started filming the man, who then slapped a phone out of one of the “D.A.P” member’s hands, police said. That led to a fight, and the man fired his gun, hitting Carnicom in the leg. The group then took the man’s gun and ran.

According to the assistant chief of the Fremont Police Department, Carnicom went to a local area hospital to seek treatment for the gunshot wound.

The assistant chief said he wasn’t surprised when he got word the group was involved in the situation, adding that he has dealt with them for years. He said they have been banned from various grocery stores in Ohio because their meet-ups often turn into physical violence.

The assistant chief acknowledged that the group has brought awareness to a problem but said his department can’t condone its tactics.

FOX8 reached out to Mundy to get his side of the story. In a message, he could not go into details but that his group has been cooperating with the investigation and maintains they did not do anything wrong.

In a post on Mundy’s Instagram, he said he is “heavily considering retiring and removing myself from the field.”

Fremont police said Mundy and Carnicom do not have any past charges related to D.A.P activities.

Winston-Salem police have not filed any charges against the people involved and say this is still an active and open investigation.

DAP Smear -- Sandusky Co., OH law enforcement agencies issue stern warning to online vigilante group "Dads Against Predators"

Here's an idea-- instead of idle threats, how about arresting these thugs?

(Not that the cops are doing much better, bragging about their own entrapment operations.)

I'd love to see these thugs in prison where they belong.

Law enforcement calling on Dads Against Predators to cease operations

by Aaron LeedyMonday, October 19th 2020

FREMONT, Ohio — A group of people made up of police chiefs, a prosecutor and a sheriff are calling on the organization Dads Against Predators, also known as Dap, Inc., to cease operations because they say it affects their ability to properly capture and prosecute people accused of sex crimes against children.

The Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office says Dap, Inc. posts several videos showing themselves encountering people in various community locations and exposing them as child predators.

Authorities said in a news release issued October 19 that after luring individuals to meet with Dap, Inc. members at a location for a potential sexual encounter, DAP records and publishes the chat communication, as well as the-face-to-face encounter on their Facebook page and YouTube channel.

“Unfortunately, DAP fails to potentially realize that it is creating seriously hazardous and potentially dangerous situations in community settings,” the news release stated. “By conducting these ‘operations’ in the manner that they do, it renders law enforcement unable to criminally charge these individuals and prosecutors unable to prosecute. Therefore, these potential predators are able to walk away with no repercussions for what they had the intent to do. DAP has, in essence, educated these people on ways to not get caught in the future, thus creating the potential for future victims of sexual assault. These victims are the very people we, as law enforcement, prosecutors and mental health professionals, are here to help and protect."

The news release was signed by Sandusky County Sheriff Christopher Hilton, Mental Health and Recovery Services Board Executive Director Mircea Handru, Sandusky County Prosecutor Beth Tischler, City of Fremont Law Director Jim Melle, Fremont Police Chief Dean Bliss, Green Springs Police Chief Charles Home, Clyde Police Chief Monti Campbell and Bellevue Police Chief Marc Linder.

"Local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors of Sandusky County and the City of Fremont cannot and will not sit back anymore and watch as DAP continues to parade its form of vigilante justice. Its intentions may be well intended, but their methods and outcomes are improper and unacceptable. The 'exposed' individuals may be exactly what DAP says they are, but they also may not be. DAP's careless and reckless regard for law and order and due process has resulted in the loss of life, and the situation has gotten out of hand," the news release stated.

"We ask DAP to stop, step aside and let law enforcement do what they are trained to do, which is to successfully find, investigate, arrest and prosecute those who would attempt to harm the most vulnerable of our society, our children. The judicial system shall decide whether these individuals are in fact guilty or not guilty; and everyone has the right to a due process. We will fight for them as we fight for all victims of abuse and crime. We will help those who have been victimized. In Fremont and Sandusky County, we have the resources available to help victims and will do so at a moment's notice. We are dedicated to protecting and serving everyone," authorities said. "Should DAP continue their vigilante efforts, we may be forced to prosecute them for their actions."

DAP creator Joshua Mundy says the organization started in January of this year. DAP's website is a single page directing people to a donation page. The website claims DAP has caught more than 46 predators. DAP's social media pages are more active, featuring videos of encounters.

"We were surprised by it. I didn't see it coming," said Mundy in response to the announcement from law enforcement.

Mundy told NBC 24 in a phone interview he wished authorities would have spoken privately with him first before making a public statement. He said he plans to go to the sheriff's office and speak with the sheriff directly.

"If I'm doing something illegal, then I need to be prosecuted already. If you're not going to prosecute me, then I feel like you're playing a silly game with justice," said Mundy. "I feel like there's nothing they can prosecute me with because I've worked within the law this whole time," said Mundy. "Go and watch the videos for yourself and you'll see that we have nothing but proof. By them saying it's impossible for them to work with us is a flat-out lie." he said.

Mundy said he has had success working with certain law enforcement agencies, specifically the Woodville Police Department.

Sandusky County authorities say so far this year, their own efforts led to several arrests and highlighted several initiatives and sting operations spanning several months. Two of those initiatives were an undercover sting that resulted in 15 arrests and a sex offender registration sweep that resulted in eight arrests.

Sandusky Sheriff threatens to prosecute DAP after multiple suicides connected to sting videos

Multiple law enforcement agencies warning the Dads Against Predators group to stop entrapping, recording men they track on the internet.

FREMONT, Ohio (WTVG) - A vigilante group that records videos of men allegedly looking to meet minors for sex is being warned by multiple law enforcement agencies to stop what they’re doing or face potential prosecution after two suicides.

The group, the Fremont chapter of Dads Against Predators, was specifically targeted in a letter signed by the Sandusky County Sheriff and County Prosecutor, as well as multiple police chiefs in the county.

“Local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors of Sandusky County and the City of Fremont cannot and will not sit back anymore and watch as DAP continues to parade its form of vigilante justice,” the letter, released Monday, read. “Its intentions may be well-intended, but their methods and outcomes are improper and unacceptable. The ‘exposed’ individuals may be exactly what DAP says they are, but they also may not be. DAP’s careless and reckless regard for law and order and due process has resulted in the loss of life, and the situation has gotten out of hand.”

Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said “loss of life” was a reference to two individuals who died by suicide after DAP posted videos of them on YouTube, and third suspected suicide, where a man died a day after his DAP video was posted online.

The letter lists multiple actions law enforcement has taken in 2020 to combat sex offenders, including dozens of arrests.

Fremont Ohio Vigilante group "Dads Against Predators" do not want to be called vigilantes, despite being a vigilante group.

It is a common theme-- vigilante thugs post "busts" on social media, and the police claim they don't condone this ehavior yet allow these thugs to continue operating. Phillip "Flip" Conley and Joshua Mundy claim they aren't vigilante scumbags but even the news article admits they fit the bill. They also want to push for castration and death penalty laws, so these two are pretty sick in the head.

Local group wants to rid Fremont of sexual predators

Men pose online as teen boys to lure suspects to a meeting site

FREMONT - Three men are trying to shed light on a sexual predator problem in Fremont by luring potential sex offenders to a rendezvous site by posing as teen boys, then videotaping the suspects.

But Joshua Mundy and Phillip "Flip" Conley of the group Dads Against Predators do not want to be called vigilantes.

The two, along with a third man who does not want to be identified, are trying to spotlight a problem they say can happen in any community.

"We don't want any copycats. And don't harass the families," Mundy said of what DAP does.

Though they don't call themselves vigilantes, they could be considered such, as Webster's Dictionary defines a vigilante as "a member of a volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily (as when the processes of law are viewed as inadequate)."

During a Thursday press conference, Fremont Police Chief Dean Bliss said the group has shined an unfortunate light on predatory issues going on in Fremont, but said he does not encourage that type of justice, because of legal issues.

"I think their hearts are in the right place," Bliss said.

Acting Sandusky County Prosecutor Zak Selvey said  there is "significant" evidentiary concerns about these videos being used against suspects in three videos DAP has posted on YouTube.com.

"For a crime to occur, there's a statute in Ohio called the importuning statute which is what we believe cases like these fall under, and it creates issues if the person involved is not a law enforcement officer or actual minor child," Selvey said.

On Tuesday, the group Dads Against Predators posted a video on YouTube in which they confronted Rafael Valadez-Loera, 39, at the Walmart on Ohio 53 in Fremont after the group said they used dating applications and posed as a 14-year-old boy to lure the man to the store to meet for sexual relations.

The video went viral, getting 98,800 views in less than three days.

Valadez-Loera was charged with tampering with evidence, though Bliss did not say if the charges were related to the DAP case.

Two other videos surfaced on the DAP YouTube page, each highlighting men they messaged through apps for sex.

Mundy said he's married with three children and wanted to shine the light on predatory problems in Fremont after discovering videos of similar group in Connecticut called POP (Prey on Predators).

He was inspired to get involved in Fremont by a 2018 case in which police investigated an attempted abduction at Hayes Elementary School

And it has worked for Mundy and Conley, who stay up late, keeping their "fishing pole" online in hopes of catching a big fish.

"They are like fishes," Mundy said about the men they message. "They go away and then 15 minutes later, they're back."

And once the group has the fish hooked, it does not take long to set the wheels in motion to confront the men who are planning sexual relations with what they think is a teen boy.

Mundy said he's sacrificed time with his family to continue working to out potential predators, but the time is well spent if another potential sex offender is outed on the group's YouTube page.

He said he understands the risks involved in meeting strangers, but Mundy said it is more nerves than fear when meeting the men they've lured to the rendezvous.

Mundy said DAP will continue working on outing potential predators but said they will not be partnering with the Fremont Police Department.

"We just want to clean Fremont out," Mundy said of sexual predators.

He added his goal is to see harsher punishment for predators, including chemical castration and the death penalty.

Since the group has begun, Mundy estimates he has received messages from at least 100 people, though not all are from Fremont.
